About Kareema Smith: Kareema is currently pursuing a doctorate in Counseling Psychology and is in the final phase of her training. She is also completing an APA-accredited internship in Health Service Psychology at the University of Virginia. Her view of healing is centered at the heart of connection. She believes that as human beings, we are wired to connect; as a result, we grow through empathic, loving, and authentic relationships. As a researcher, her interests relate to examining both psychological stressors and aspects of positive psychology such as well-being and resilience. More specifically, she particularly focuses on the intersection between racism-related stress and psychological thriving and how this relates to healing for Black people. Her career goal is to work as a practitioner in a university counseling center while gaining experience in leadership. Long term, she strives to merge her experiences in higher education/student affairs and counseling psychology to serve in a leadership role that focuses on developing, promoting, and advocating for mental health/wellness at an institutional level. Many of Kareema’s values are related to love and community and she thrives from spending time with family and friends, reading, and traveling.
